I have been feeling regret lately. Years ago when I was in college, after it's life ended, I traded my Dreamcast in towards a PS2. I can't say I made the wrong call there, the PS2 is one of the best systems of all time. But now I'm browsing EBay and it seems like I can pick up a Dreamcast cheap. Like $20. And that could even come with a game or 2. So the question is, what games do I need to get if I get a dreamcast? Here are the games that immediately come to mind:
1) Jet Grind Radio
2) Sonic Advance
3) Soul Calibur
4) NBA 2K2
5) Crazy Taxi 1 & 2
6) Super Magnetic Neo (Shut up, I always wanted to play it)
7) Fur Fighters
Anything I'm missing? Note: I don't really care about anything that was ported to another system unless it was REALLY superior on the DC. So save you Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 2 suggestions. And Jon, I am never playing Shenmue, so don't even bring it up. I have Rayman 2 on PS2, so I probably don't need it on DC unless it's ridiculously awesome. Star Wars Pod Racer.... that was great on N64, how was that on DC?
I realize I contradicted myself up there, if you have an idea, just post it. That includes if you just want to say something about something already on my list. (Though I am never changing my mind about Super Magnetic Neo)
Give me some ideas please1
I don't know if Jet Grind Radio is at the top of that list for any particular reason, but if it is, then it definitely earned it. If it was just by chance, everything happens for a reason. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to look through my Dreamcast collection (aka pile of burned CD's) and see what else you're missing here. Your list seems pretty solid so far, with the exception of Fur Fighters; I played it for a short while and hated it.
Oh, and yes, you need Grandia 2. The porting team BROKE that game when they brought it over to the PS2 and PC. The game runs much smoother and the visual effects are much better on the Dreamcast.

Did you play the DC version of Furfighters, or are you basing it off the PS2 version? They're not the same game.
ReplyDeleteI actually technically still have Grandia 2, but you know I'm never actually going to play it.
And yes, while the list isn't technically in order, Jet Grind is first for a reason ;)
Why is Sonic Advance one of the games you want for Dreamcast? ;) Keep in mind that both Sonic Adventure games were released for Gamecube, with extras (such as a bunch of other classic Sonic games, some even for Game Gear), and I would imagine the ports of the core games themselves are probably pretty faithful to the DC versions. An especially attractive prospect since you can just play them on your Wii.
ReplyDeleteHere are a few suggestions I'll throw into the mix:
-Power Stone 1-2 (if you ever actually plan on playing with anybody, otherwise I'm sure the PSP collection will serve you just fine if you'll mainly be playing it solo)
-The Typing of the Dead (don't know how easy it is or isn't to get a DC keyboard these days, but this game is an absolute must)
-Phantasy Star Online (yeah yeah, the servers are off, but this is the only version that you can actually still play and continue to play forever since it wasn't online-only like the later ports/versions/sequels. And it isn't COMPLETELY worthless offline)
-Zombie Revenge (a fun, old school arcade-style beat-em-up and one of the only 3D ones that isn't total garbage).
-Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage (a sort of God of War, Devil May Cry-type hack'n'slash that may or may not still hold up post-those games, but it was a lot of fun at the time. Proceed with caution on this one since I haven't played it in about 8 years)
-Seaman (a game I still really want to get myself, and it just seems to sum up where Sega was at in those days: Proud of its own creativity and completely unafraid to release, and in the US no less, any oddball crackpot thing that their crazy teams dreamt up, and they fully backed each and every one)
-Project Justice (the sequel to Rival Schools, and it's pretty highly beloved. Pretty rare and expensive, though, which is why I don't have it myself)
-Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves (see above basically, just substitute "Rival Schools" for "the Fatal Fury series")
-Toy Commander (a wacky little RC helicopter game that is supposed to be a lot of fun)
-Virtual On: OT (I never played much of the Virtual On series, but it has a pretty big cult following, and I'm pretty sure this is a well-regarded version)
-Virtua Fighter 3tb (I've always been curious about this since it's sort of the "forgotten" VF, at least in my own gaming timeline. I know the DC version took a lot of flak, but I'd still like to grab it one day just for my own completeist nature. That's just me, though)
-Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future (truthfully I don't know a ton about this game, but it got good reviews at the time as I recall)
-Ooga Booga (a really fun party game, but not so much single player, and the problem is that it makes you play it a lot single-player to unlock all the modes and levels. I sure don't miss the days of that nonsense. Still worth a look though if you think you can get 3 other people to play it with you with any regularity)
